Singing the Bible

My weird passion project is finding contemporary songs that directly link to a particular passage or story from the Bible, and listening to them in the same order as they appear in the Bible.

I limit myself to songs that are focused on bringing out the words or contemplating the ideas of a specific part of Scripture; or telling the story of a person’s experience in a particular passage. Creative license on the wording is fine, but the songs must be clearly linked to a particular passage or book, not just a mix of Biblical ideas or themes. I’m not prejudiced against any particular genre (even kids’ music makes an appearance!) but I need to like the song, for myself.

For the most part, I put the songs in Biblical rather than chronological order, but the exception is with the gospels, where I’ve sought to follow the timeline of the life of Jesus, rather than strictly Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

I’m drawn to this because I love constructs of classical music like the oratorio or the requiem, which help to express Scripture or liturgy in musical form, and I wish we had more of this in modern music. I also like that it brings out more things from Scripture than perhaps many normal CCM/worship songs do – sorrow, pain, exhortation to good works, story telling, as well as praise.

I’ve used NIV for most of the Bible references but obviously some of the versions used by the songwriters are different. E.g. The Corner Room tends to use ESV. If the song covers a long passage, I have used some example verses, but linked to the whole text.

Needless to say, I will keep adding songs as I find them. This has ballooned as I’ve discovered just how many cool bands focusing on putting Scripture to music are out there.

Here we go! Links to the youtube video are in the image.
